Four Seasons

With hurricane season in full swing until November, Four Seasons Plumbing, a leading home services provider serving the greater Asheville area, is offering tips to local homeowners for proactively defending their homes against water damage during heavy rains.

“With our area being soaked by the remnants of Tropical Storm Beta during the last few days, local homeowners are well aware of the threat of flooding during these weather events,” said Max Rose, owner of Four Seasons Plumbing. “The good news is that it’s not too late to prepare your home before the next storm system comes knocking.”

Rose and the Four Seasons Plumbing team recommends the following steps to prevent water damage:

  • Clean gutters and downspouts: Be sure to regularly remove fallen leaves and debris from gutters. If a gutter or downspout is clogged, it won’t drain properly and can lead to basement flooding. Also, make sure the downspouts extend at least three feet away from the foundation to keep water away from the home.
  • Check for basement leaks: Even small leaks can become big problems over time. Inspect the interior and exterior of the home’s foundation, walls, floors and windows for cracks. Fill any cracks found with waterproof epoxy.
  • Install back-flow valves: Sometimes, flooding can be caused by a backed-up sewer line. By installing an inexpensive back-flow, homeowners can prevent sewer water from backing up into the basement during heavy rains.
  • Install or inspect sump pumps: Sump pumps are used to remove water that collects in basements or crawl spaces beneath a home. Homeowners should consider installing a sump pump to protect the home against costly water damage. If one is already installed, now is the time to have it tested and possibly inspected. To test, simply fill a large bucket with water and pour it into the sump pit. If the motor doesn’t start, there may be an issue.

Four Seasons Plumbing’s technicians follow strict health and safety guidelines in order to continue providing the Asheville area with essential plumbing-related services.
