Legally Addictive Foods plans to move its cookie manufacturing operations to Asheville. The company will invest in tenant improvements and machinery and equipment and will bring 15 new jobs over the next three years, according to a Buncombe County news release. Legally Addictive Foods will hire locally to fill these jobs as soon as July 2022.
Legally Addictive Foods was started in Brooklyn, New York, more than six years ago when the founder discovered a way to turn a family recipe into a commercial, shelf-stable product. In the beginning, a few stores in New York City agreed to carry Legally Addictive Foods, including the flagship location of Dylan’s Candy Bar, as well as Williams Sonoma and the Kimpton Hotel Group. Today, Legally Addictive Foods is carried in more than 1,500 retailers and hotels in North America, Canada, Japan, Turks & Caicos, the UK and Bermuda.
“One of our main goals for the business is to increase our online direct-to-consumer sales. Relocating to Asheville will give us an incredible geographic advantage since we will now be located within two shipping days of over 50% of the U.S. population. This will allow us to better serve our customers and to do so at a lower cost,” said Laura Shafferman, a partner in the company. “We are truly inspired by both the business and creative communities in Asheville and are grateful to everyone who has already been so kind and welcoming to us.”
Brownie Newman, chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, said the county was pleased Legally Addictive Foods was joining the community. “Beyond the immediate benefit of new jobs and community investment, this news strengthens our national reputation for creativity, entrepreneurship and craft manufacturing.”
“This company has seen incredible growth, from the farmers market to a fast-growing, international customer base,” said Jay Richardson, board chair of the Economic Development Coalition for Asheville – Buncombe County. “We are grateful they have chosen to invest in Buncombe County and excited to support their next era of expansion.”
