The ACA boys basketball team got off to a quick 2-0 start on the season by picking up wins over two top tier Charlotte basketball teams. The 2018 Tip Off Classic at Carmel Christian Academy in Charlotte was filled with high level programs. Oak Hill Academy came into the event ranked as the MaxPreps #2 team in the country.
The host team, Carmel Christian, entered the event as the #29 team. The Lions didn’t draw either Oak Hill or Carmel but opened up against Hickory Grove Christian Academy. ACA got out to an incredibly quick start piling up 54 first half points thanks to 11 made three pointers. Senior Raishaun Brown scored 24 first half points and drained 5 threes before the halftime break. Hickory Grove made a run at the Lions in the second half but ACA held on for the 80-73 win. Brown finished with 30 total points followed by junior Tyler McKinney who scored 24. Sophomore Kavan Horton added 14 points and four three pointers.
The Lions knocked out Providence Day School in the second game of the weekend 55-43. ACA once again jumped out to a large first half lead and took a 15 point lead to the break. Providence Day cut the lead to eight in the second half but the Lions did enough to secure the 12 point victory. McKinney led the way for the Lions with 22 points.
The Lions return to action this week with two home matchups. Calvary Day School comes to town on Tuesday, November 13th and Combine Academy travels up the mountain to play the Lions on Thursday, November 15th. Both games tip at 6:15.
The ACA girls team will open up their regular season with a home contest against Combine on Thursday and will tip before the boys at 5:00.
