Do your kids like to run? Would you like them to be more active? Healthy Kids Running Series (HKRS) was created to provide kids with a positive, educational and fun experience.

HKRS is a 5- week running program in the fall and spring. Races takes place once a week. Distance varies based on the child’s age - from the 50-yard dash for the youngest runners, all the way up to the mile for the oldest group.

The Asheville series was named “Best Race for Kids,” by Competitor Groups’ Southeast Edition.

The 5-week spring season kicks off on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 16 at Glenn Marlow Elementary School,1985 Butler Bridge Road in Mills River. Races start at 3:30, so please arrive by 2:30 p.m. for packet pickup.

Children ages 3 through 8th grade are eligible to participate. After the kickoff on September 16, the races continue Sundays September 23, 30, and October 7 & 14, at 3:30 p.m.

Register online at In-person registration will also be available the day of each race.

The $35 registration fee covers the entire 5-week series and a technical tee shirt. Registration is also available for individual races at $10 per race. Tech shirts are not available for single registrations.

Children should wear sneakers, and please note registration is non-refundable.

Kids compete each week of the series for a chance to earn points, and at the end of the series the top boy and girl with the most points in their respective age division receives a trophy. This series is not about speed but rather about letting the kids participate in an outdoor, healthy, event. All runners receive weekly ribbons or prizes. A medal is awarded to all runners at the end of the season.

“The Healthy Kids Running Series is about having fun and encouraging our kids to remain active,” said Aaron Saft, race director. “Our goal is to provide a fun and positive experience for every participant and to see them improve over the five weeks.”

Over 50,000 kids participate in more than 200 Healthy Kids Running Series nationwide.

Healthy Kids Running Series (HKRS) is a national, community-based, nonprofit which provides a fun, five-week, running program for ages 3-14 that gets kids active, helps them feel accomplished, and lays the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.
