“Every business needs to have a sign,” says Arlene Sullivan, co-owner of Signarama with her husband, Ed Sullivan.

Signarama offers customers a comprehensive range of sign services from decals and labels to monument signs and three-dimensional illuminated signs.

The Sullivans and their staff help their customers choose signs in sizes and colors that create clear visual images with effective messages to identify and promote their businesses.

“We work closely with clients,” says Ed. “We pride ourselves in offering some unique options.”

The Signarama shop has a large production area where graphic designers and technicians work on a multitude of projects from large murals and wall signs to business cards. 

Since moving to the present location on Shiloh Road two years ago, the space for the business has tripled in size from 2,000 to 6,000 square feet, Ed notes. 

The business also has acquired vehicles and equipment, including a bucket truck used for installations and a transit van, since it began in 2011.

“When we started out, our vehicle was a 2006 red Mazda minivan,” says Ed. “We looked more like a daycare (service) pulling up,” he adds with humor.

After moving to Asheville from Greensboro, the Sullivans bought the Signarama franchise, which they independently own and operate.

“We moved here to do Signarama,” Ed says. “We had to learn the franchise in two weeks,” he adds.

However, the couple brought their individual professional backgrounds to the business in order to build it and make it a successful enterprise. Arlene has extensive experience in sales and management. And Ed worked in the printing business for many years.

“It’s very creative. Every job is different,” Arlene says of the sign business.

The decision to settle in Asheville was an easy choice for the couple who had been visiting the area for quite a few years while living in the piedmont region of North Carolina.

“We really like the mountains,” Arlene says.

While getting established, the newly launched enterprise got the “biggest jolt” by joining the Asheville Chamber of Commerce, Ed says. 

The Sullivans also reached out to the community, and have done quite a bit of work for non-profit organizations over the years. One of their first projects was creating the signage for the ReStore building of Asheville Habitat for Humanity.

“That allowed us to meet with other clients,” Ed remarks.

Signarama is a full service business that takes projects from design to installation. Window graphics, LED and neon signs, exterior and interior light boxes, banners and flags, trade show displays, and street signs are all among services the company provides. Digital menu boards and video walls with one player that drives up to four HD screens and holographic presenters are also options for customers, as well as large photographic murals.

Signarama is an international franchise with more than 800 locations in the United States and other countries. Father and son team Roy and Ray Titus founded the company in 1986 and opened the initial business in Farmingdale, New York.

In establishing the business, Titus took signage from the industrial facilities and warehouses to more accessible retail spaces for their customers.

One of the advantages of being a partner in the Signarama franchise is that the Sullivans reap the benefit of consulting with other owners who freely give helpful advice, Ed says.
