Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and that means different things for different people. While some love Feb. 14 so much that they countdown the seconds to its arrival - prepping with boxed chocolates and red roses - others opt to spend the day celebrating with friends, enjoying time alone, or not celebrating at all.
Regardless of your celebration style, Asheville’s area hot spots have a spectrum of offerings to satisfy every taste for the day.
Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) will be hosting an after-hours Make & Mingle event, exploring the science of sour by sipping gose from UpCountry Brewing, cocktails from H&H Distillery, and all paired with mini cakes from Short Street Cakes from 7 to 9 p.m.
In addition to the tasting, AMOS will host mini science sessions about chocolate making presented by UNC Asheville's chemistry department, a genetics-themed scavenger hunt, and a laser-cutter demonstration.
Proceeds from the event will support STEM education in Western North Carolina. The Asheville Museum of Science is at 43 Patton Ave. in downtown.
Tickets are $20 at ashevillescience.org/event/makemingle-valentines and include all activities and two drink tickets.
The Social, located at 1078 Tunnel Road, will be pairing an interactive Murder Mystery Dinner Show (ages 21 and up) with a four-course menu prepared by Chefs Robyn Ziegler and Josh Widner of Ziggy’s Bakery & Deli, which will include: an appetizer, salad, entree of choice (Filet Mignon, Chicken Roulade, or Cauliflower Steak), and dessert.
Seating is four per table, making it a perfect opportunity to do a double date or friend celebration of Valentine’s Day, and the event will be followed by karaoke with DJ Stephani Fajardo of Get Vocal Entertainment.
The show is scheduled from 7-10 p.m. at The Social, and tickets may be purchased online at The Social’s Facebook page for $35.
For the less serious and more uncouth celebrators of the day, West Asheville music and wedding venue, Fleetwood’s Rock-N-Roll Wedding Chapel, is hosting a mass fake wedding for patrons from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Preface the event with a visit to one of the many West Asheville foodie staples - including The Admiral or Jargon - and conclude the evening at Fleetwood’s.
Attendees will receive a fake marriage certificate, a ring, along with cake and champagne.
Fleetwood’s is located at 496 Haywood Road in West Asheville.
The Beer Lover
Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard will be hosting a beer and dinner pairing with specialty beers brewed just for the day. The event includes live music and a four-course meal with hand-selected beers.
The menu includes an appetizer of candied pork belly lollipops with pickled red onions and blue cheese mousse; spinach and spring mix salad with roasted beets, citrus supremes and balsamic vinaigrette; a main course of shellfish, andouille sausage and chicken paella with saffron risotto; and a dessert of hop-infused creme brûlée.
Tickets for the event may be purchased online at eventbrite.com
The Chocolate Lover
For the traditionalist chocolate lover, the French Broad Chocolate Lounge has partnered with Foothills Brewery to create a Valentine’s Day Truffle and Beer Pairing event at The Grey Eagle in the River Arts District. Begin the evening with a walking tour of local art studios, dining at the Bull and Beggar or Smoky Park Supper Club on the river, and end the evening with beer and dessert at the Grey Eagle.
There will be a pairing of five truffles with beer, and experts from French Broad Chocolate Lounge and Foothills Brewery will be on site to talk about the pairing.
Tickets are $20 and may be purchased online at the Grey Eagle’s website.
Regardless of the holiday, many Asheville restaurants, bars, breweries, and businesses are offering special events on the 14th that can be enjoyed single or with a partner or friends and family.
