Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the team behind local downtown Asheville restaurant Chestnut made the difficult decision to close until further notice back in March. Now, with widespread community support, the eatery is open for takeout.

Located at 48 Biltmore Ave., the restaurant has been preparing to reopen over the past few weeks. Staff members have completed a deep cleaning of the entire restaurant, created a brand new takeaway menu, and put new procedures in place regarding the health and safety of their employees.

“To get ready for this new phase in our restaurant life, we have cleaned the restaurant from stem to stern and created protocols for our staff that promote a safe work environment,” Owner/Manager Kevin Westmoreland and Owner/Head Chef Joe Scully said in a statement.

Guests will be able to choose hand-crafted meals-to-go—including the establishment’s ever-popular shrimp n’ grits—stock up on locally sourced ingredients for the kitchen, and order meal kits—think Lavender Chicken and Sunburst Trout—to feed the whole family. Libations, sweets, and merchandise can also be added to any order for takeaway.

“We will offer as much from local farms and vendors as possible, and use environmentally friendly packaging like we always have,” Westmoreland said. “We are working toward that day when we can all be together inside the restaurant for a meal together.”

During this time, Chestnut will be taking every necessary precaution when it comes to reopening the restaurant. This includes taking temperatures of all employees, requiring face masks while working, and sanitizing thoroughly.

Due to several changes related to the world we all live in right now, the new menu at Chestnut is somewhat smaller than what was offered for in-house dining. “But we believe we have created a menu that is delicious, comforting, and offers a nice alternative to cooking everything from scratch at home,” Scully said.

Eventually, the restaurant hopes to open up the pantry for customers to come in and peruse like your favorite general store. Delivery options will also soon be available for takeaway orders.

Chestnut will be open for pick-up orders every day from noon-8 p.m. Guests can place their orders online at toasttab.com/chestnut-asheville or call 828- 575-2667.
