Both the boys and girls basketball teams at Asheville Christian Academy took to the road on the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving to take on Calvary Day School (Winston Salem) and Grace Christian Academy (Raleigh).
The boys team struggled early against Calvary and faced a four point deficit at the half. In the third quarter the Lions tightened up their defense and settled into their offensive system. ACA outscored Calvary by 13 points in the third quarter and extended the lead in the fourth to beat Calvary 64-52. The Lions were led by sophomore Tyler McKinney who came off the bench to score 18 points in the victory.
Against Grace Christian the Lions found little resistance as they jumped out to a 26-2 lead in the opening quarter. The Lions were in cruise control from then on winning the game 86-51. Elochukwu Eze paced the Lions finishing with 18 points including three second half dunks.
The boys team is currently 6-1 on the season. They play Legacy Charter at home on Friday, December 1 and then welcome the best team in the state, Greensboro Day, and their legendary coach Freddy Johnson on Saturday, December 2. Greensboro Day enters the contest as the #14 ranked team in the country according to USA Today. Johnson is the all-time winningest coach in NC basketball history and just picked up his 1,000 career win last week. Game time against Greensboro Day on Saturday is scheduled for 4:00.
The ACA girls team continued to roll on the young season. They dismantled Calvary Day School in Monday’s game and beat Grace Christian 63-29 on Tuesday. The two wins keep the Lions perfect on the season at 7-0. Their next contest is at home on Saturday, December 2 at 2:30 against Greensboro Day School.
