Steve Alford to Perform Wednesday Jazz on July 12

The summer edition of Wednesday Jazz at the White Horse Black Mountain continues on Wednesday, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. with jazz woodwind maverick Steve Alford. Proficient on saxophones and many lesser-heard members of the clarinet family, player/composer Alford is a daring and inventive exponent of original jazz with a penchant for discovering unusual tones and textures.

After graduating from of the University of Miami Steve Alford traveled the world as a musician before settling in Asheville. In addition to the saxophone family, he specializes in woodwinds that aren’t commonly heard in jazz settings, like contra-alto, bass and contrabass clarinets.

Alford is the leader and primary composer for the genre-bending big band Rational Discourse as well as METAL, an amplified group that explores the lower frequencies of the musical spectrum. Alford also performs with the E.Normus Trio and Road Less Traveled when not teaching at UNC Asheville or his own private studio.
